Introduction: Why Industrial Wastewater Is Now India’s Biggest Environmental Threat Industrialization has created jobs, growth and innovation - but it has also produced millions of litres of toxic wastewater every single day. Most factories, industrial parks, hotels, commercial kitchens, textile units, and food-processing plants generate wastewater containing chemicals, oils, detergents, dyes, heavy metals and organic pollutants. When this wastewater enters rivers without proper treatment, it destroys aquatic life, contaminates groundwater and turns once-pure rivers into toxic drains. Today, more than 70% of India’s freshwater sources are polluted , mainly due to untreated industrial effluents. This crisis is growing every year as industries expand and water scarcity increases.
